Vancouver Heritage

Vancouver - British Columbia - Canada

Heritage is a concept interpreted in various ways depending on the context in which it is used. It can be personal and subjective or bureaucratic and objective. For some it is files composed of details to be kept in other files or even to be used to generate more files. In others passions are awakened when "heritage" is mentioned since there is a "romantic" connotation to it, evoking history, social and cultural issues, memories of childhood days, stories heard from family elders and other personal or group perspectives.

This website is an accumulation of specific projects related to cataloguing, in a visual manner, the structures in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland that have been acknowledged by various levels of government as having heritage value. As well non official collections, such as neighborhoods, schools, churches, architectural styles and others that are no less worthy of attention and celebration will also be featured.

As time goes on more information will be added to all of the pages dealing with different aspects (culture, history, architecture, technical data, resources, museums, associations, societies...) that will make the viewing experience more enjoyable.

Enjoy your visit. Suggestions, comments are always welcome.

The Vancouver Heritage Registry, Schedule "A" and "B", is the listing of the City of Vancouver's municipally designated (as opposed to identified) heritage structures. Buildings that may seem to be missing could be included in provincial and federal heritage programs.

There are 3 jurisdictions on what is considered to be the North Shore in the Vancouver area. The District of West Vancouver, the District of North Vancouver and the City of North Vancouver. Each oversees the heritage issues within its' borders. An inventory generated by these governments has been transcribed and listed here for information and research purposes. These inventories are unofficial and reflect data from publicly available documents. There may or may not be more recently published information. At this time landscapes and trees have not been listed but will be considered for the future.

The City of New Westminster has produced a comprehensive inventory of heritage material consisting of 4 volumes. The content presented in each volume is not necessarily in the same style. These lists attempt to provide a commonality of presentation.

An inventory of structures in the part of downtown Vancouver known as Gastown (the commonly accepted birthplace of the city) and Chinatown. These areas are provincially designated sites defined geographically rather than by structure. The administration of the heritage elements is the responsibility of the City of Vancouver.
